Beyond the Surface: Addiction and Ethical Care

This two-part training examines the connections between behavioral addictions, trauma, mental health, and co-occurring concerns. Participants will explore how underlying risk factors and life experiences can contribute to behaviors, with a focus on gambling and other behavioral addictions. The sessions emphasize ethical and trauma-informed assessment, intervention, referral, and person-centered approaches that help professionals respond effectively to complex behavioral health needs.


Intermediate Level Continuing Education Credit Includes:

Counselors: Mental Health America of the MidSouth is an approved continuing education provider through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC)

COURSE
OBJECTIVES


IDENTIFY common signs, risk factors, and co-occurring concerns associated with trauma, behavioral addictions, and co-occurring mental health and substance use concerns.
DESCRIBE strategies for recognizing the impact of behavioral addictions on individuals and families and responding with person-centered, appropriate, and effective support.
APPLY ethical and trauma-informed approaches to assessment, intervention, referral, and collaborative care when supporting individuals with complex behavioral health concerns.

Keith Windsor, M.S.

Keith Windsor is a behavioral health leader, recovery advocate, and forensic peer support pioneer with extensive experience serving individuals impacted by addiction, gambling disorder, and involvement in the justice system. After nearly 20 years of addiction, incarceration across multiple states, and repeated attempts at recovery, Keith transformed his lived experience into a lifelong commitment to helping others find lasting recovery. 

As the first Certified Forensic Peer Support Specialist in the state of Mississippi, Keith helped develop and train forensic peer recovery programs that now serve justice-involved individuals across Mississippi and Tennessee. Today, he serves in clinical leadership roles with the University of Memphis and The Gambling Clinic, where he oversees client engagement and retention, supervises peer support specialists, and helps expand access to evidence-informed treatment for individuals experiencing gambling-related disorders. 

Keith is passionate about reducing stigma, strengthening recovery systems, and demonstrating the vital role of peer support in behavioral health. Keith holds a Masters Degree in Social Sciences from the University of Memphis, is a CPRS, and holds several certifications in addiction therapy.  

Dr. Xyzeidria Ensley, PhD, LPC-MHSP, LADACII

Dr. Ensley earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Counseling from Trevecca Nazarene University and is licensed as both a Professional Counselor (LPC-MHSP) and an Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADAC II). Her clinical and leadership expertise includes addiction treatment, co-occurring disorders, mood disorders, competency restoration, crisis intervention, and the development of behavioral health programming within the criminal justice system.

Throughout her career, Dr. Ensley has championed cross-system engagement, bringing together behavioral health providers, healthcare organizations, courts, correctional agencies, and community stakeholders to address the complex needs of justice-involved populations. A recognized leader in behavioral health and criminal justice collaboration, she has cultivated strategic partnerships that strengthen continuity of care, improve access to treatment, and support successful recovery and community reintegration. Her work focuses on advancing integrated approaches that bridge systems of care, align stakeholders, and improve outcomes for individuals with behavioral health needs.

In addition to her professional leadership, Dr. Ensley is actively involved in statewide and national behavioral health initiatives. She previously served on the Board of Trustees for the Middle Tennessee Mental Health Institute and currently serves on the Board of the Nashville Recovery Court Support Foundation. She also serves on the Women Working in Corrections, Substance Use Disorder, and Behavioral Health Subcommittees of the American Correctional Association.

Dr. Ensley is passionate about promoting recovery, improving access to behavioral health services, strengthening cross-system partnerships, and advancing innovative solutions that support individuals involved in the justice system.
